The department of controller assistance develops prototypic support systems for Air Traffic Controllers (ATCOs). This also encompasses human machine interfaces and functionalities for information visualisation to the air traffic operator.

The Controller working Position (CWP) is one of the most critical components of an ATM system as it serves as a main working environment and tool for ATCOs. It fuses complex multimodal information and visualizes a simplistic view of the information to avoid overcrowding the display screen. However, in different scenarios, ATCOs need more information, which can be explicitly requested from the CWP via additional mouse clicks and by search for keywords. This additional search can be cumbersome and might impact the situation awareness of the ATCO.

Smart system support based on the situation is a hot topic in the area of automation of Air Traffic Control. In order to create a valuable support system, it is important to assess ATCOs’ opinion about the support and help provided by the current system. This serves as a first impression of how to structure a situation-aware automated support system. The aim of this project is to design and conduct a scenario-based interactive survey, which can collect ATCOs’ feedback about the current information access mechanism and envisioned situation-aware support system.

In the course of your master’s/bachelor’s thesis, you will perform the following tasks:

  • Familiarisation with air traffic control concepts and CWP systems
  • Design scenario-based survey to assess the existing and expected controller support in CWP systems
  • Create a set of air traffic scenarios to address the research question
  • Development of an interactive application for scenario-based survey (web application with ability to store information in the database)
  • Conduct survey and analyse results to address the research question
  • Complementary literature research about surveys in aviation and other domains
  • Continuous documentation of working steps and results

Your qualifications:

  • studies in Aviation, Aerospace Engineering, Transport and Traffic Sciences or similar
  • good command of English for literature analysis
  • good knowledge in writing scientific essays (e.g. seminar thesis)
  • basic Web Programming skills, familiar with one programming language (python, php, or Java)
  • basic knowledge of databases
