The "Causal Inference" group at German Aerospace Center’s Institute of Data Science develops theoretical foundations, algorithms, and accessible software tools for causal inference and machine learning and closely works with domain experts. Causal inference is a challenging and promising research field in artificial intelligence and its application to a broad range of domains will have a high impact both to advance science and to address topics of critical importance for the society. The core methodological topics include causal inference and causal discovery for spatio-temporal dynamical systems, machine learning, deep learning, and nonlinear time series analysis. But the methods are flexible and open for your ideas!

The position is assigned to the project "CausalEarth", which exists in close collaboration with the Chair of Climate Informatics at TU Berlin. Within this project methods in the field of causal inference and machine learning for data-driven detection and analysis of causal relationships in the complex climate and Earth system are being developed. The goal of the position is to evaluate and apply these methods to spatio-temporal climate model/earth system model data and climate/earth observation data.

Your tasks include:

  • evaluation and application of methods in the field of causal inference and machine learning on climate model data from CMIP6 and climate observation data
  • scientific evaluation of the results with regard to the detection of causal relationships between dominant modes in the Earth system, the influence of climate change on these relationships, as well as a causal evaluation of CMIP6 models
  • collaboration with method developers as well as scientists from the climate and Earth system sciences
  • publication of results in peer-reviewed journals or renowned conferences
  • presentation of results on national and international conferences

To support your international research experience, the group has a generous travel budget for conferences and extended research stays. Currently, we have collaborators at Imperial College London, Valencia, Copenhagen, Oxford, Carnegie Mellon University, Columbia University, and California Institute of Technology, and more.

Your qualifications:

  • Master in geosciences, climate sciences, environmental sciences, physics, mathematics, statistics, informatics or a similar field of study
  • in-depth special knowledge and multiyear experience in the application of statistical analyses with relation to machine learning and artificial intelligence on climate model and climate observation data
  • multiyear experience in independent and autonomous work on complex research tasks
  • scientific publications within the mentioned fields at relevant national and international conferences with peer review and/or in scientific journals with peer review
  • fluency in written and oral English
  • good programming skills
  • strong communication skills desirable
  • PhD in geosciences, climate sciences, environmental sciences, physics, mathematics, statistics, informatics or a similar field desirable
