Type of employment

Full-time (part-time possible)

Nowadays, enormous amounts of data are produced everywhere, and this is also the case at DLR. The data is mostly generated by numerical simulations on high-performance computers or by high-resolution sensor systems mounted on e.g. satellites, aircrafts, or drones. The amount of data generated is already so huge that subsequent analysis and visualization take a lot of time and thus incur high costs. Often, analysis on a local workstation is not even possible due to insufficient hardware resources. For this reason, high-performance infrastructures must be integrated into the analysis process.

In this context, the scientific visualization group of the Institute for Software Technology is developing distributed and scalable software solutions to enable scientists to explore their data in an interactive and explorative manner.

To support this work, we are looking for a computer scientist.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • the development and evaluation of analysis and visualization methods for interactive data exploration using large scale datasets
  • the investigation of new data structures for efficient storage and high-performance access to raw data
  • the development and integration of distribution strategies for efficient processing of data on parallel resources such as a high-performance computer
  • the design and implementation of graphical user interfaces in HTML and JavaScript
  • the extension and optimization of the existing software infrastructure by integrating the developed methods into the visualization applications ParaView and CosmoScout VR

If you enjoy software development and want to become part of our team, we look forward to receive your application. We are looking for highly motivated colleagues who can identify with their work and inspire others. We also offer you the opportunity to contribute with your own ideas and to initiate new projects on your own responsibility. You will be expected to present your work at international conferences and in scientific journals. We offer an exciting, friendly and flexible working environment, where part-time employment is also possible.

Your qualifications:

  • outstanding Master's degree in computer science or similar field of study
  • very good skills in software development with C/C++
  • experience with parallelization methods such as MPI, OpenMP or CUDA
  • experience in development with HTML and JavaScript
  • ability to work in a team, creativity, independence and personal responsibility
  • very good language skills in English; fluent German is an asset
  • desirable are good skills in computer graphics programming using OpenGL and GLSL
  • knowledge using scientific visualization tools such as The Visualization Toolkit (VTK) or information visualization tools such as D3.js are desirable
  • confident use of software engineering tools, such as Git, is desirable

Your benefits:

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalleled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy places great value on a healthy family and work-life-balance as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders (f/m/x). Individuals with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the event their qualifications are equivalent to those of other candidates.
