The evolution of the systems of modern aircraft is particularly characterized by the constant increase in functionality. After the successful introduction of autopilot and fly-by-wire systems into flight control systems, complete automation of the flight control system is expected in the future and is essential for the introduction of unmanned aircraft. Furthermore, more efficient electrical power generation and distribution systems, such as fuel cells and power electronics, will be used in future aircraft. Due to the associated increase in complexity, the number of potential failure cases also increases.

As part of your work, you will develop innovative methods for condition monitoring and fault forecasting of safety-critical aircraft systems. You model the mechatronic part of the system and analyze the system with regard to optimal state variables for diagnosing damage in the system. You will also develop innovative diagnostic algorithms using modern methods of artificial intelligence and implement them. Using our extensive test stands, you can demonstrate the performance of the diagnostic systems in experiments. Your work will also be incorporated into the conception of digital twins for future DLR commercial aircraft.

Your qualifications:

  • Completed academic university degree in the field of electrical engineering, computer science, mechatronics or mechanical engineering with a relevant specialization
  • Very good knowledge of artificial intelligence, especially machine learning and explainable AI
  • In-depth knowledge of statistics and modeling of dynamic systems
  • Good knowledge of a modeling and simulation environment for dynamic systems, for example MATLAB / Simulink, Modelica or Python
  • Very good written and spoken German and English
  • Experience in the design and implementation of condition monitoring systems, proven through relevant internships and / or student work
