Methods for condition monitoring and fault prognostics of mechatronic aircraft systems

Starting date

Duration of contract

3 years

According to the German TVöD 13

Type of employment

Full-time (part-time possible)

The evolution of the systems of modern aircraft is particularly characterized by the constant increase in functionality. After the successful introduction of autopilot and fly-by-wire systems into flight control systems, complete automation of the flight control system is expected in the future and is essential for the introduction of unmanned aircraft. Furthermore, more efficient electrical power generation and distribution systems, such as fuel cells and power electronics, will be used in future aircraft. Due to the associated increase in complexity, the number of potential error cases also increases.

As part of your work, you will develop innovative methods for condition monitoring and fault forecasting of safety-critical aircraft systems. You model the mechatronic part of the system and analyze the system with regard to optimal state variables for diagnosing damage in the system. You will also develop innovative monitoring algorithms using modern methods of artificial intelligence and implement them. Using our extensive test stands, you can demonstrate the performance of the monitoring systems in experiments. Your work will also be incorporated into the conception of digital twins for future DLR commercial aircraft.

In our department you will become part of a dynamic and scientifically highly innovative team. You benefit from the existing expertise and infrastructure and contribute to their continuous development in the course of your work. If you have the necessary degree of personal responsibility and share with us the high standards on the scientific quality of your work, we can offer you the ideal environment for personal and professional development at an internationally high level.

Your qualifications:

  • completed academic university degree in the field of electrical engineering, communications engineering, mechatronics, or mechanical engineering with a relevant specialization with a minimum rating of “good”
  • very good knowledge of modeling and simulation techniques
  • knowledge of neural networks is an advantage
  • good knowledge of a modeling and simulation environments for dynamic systems, for example MALAB / Simulink
  • very good written and spoken German and English
  • experience in the design and implementation of condition monitoring systems, proven through relevant internships and / or student work is a plus

Your benefits:

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalleled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy places great value on a healthy family and work-life-balance as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders (f/m/x). Individuals with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the event their qualifications are equivalent to those of other candidates.
