Monitoring system for an agrivoltaic greenhouse

Starting date

1 January 2023

Duration of contract

min. 6 months

Type of employment

Start your career with an interesting internship at DLR Solar Research Institute, one of the world’s leading institutions in the field of solar technology!

You are passionate about renewable energies and energy transition? Then join our team!

Agrivoltaics is the combination of photovoltaic (PV) electricity production and agricultural use of arable land and offers a solution to solve the competition between land use for agriculture and the expansion of renewable energies. This combination can be realized e.g. by mounting PV modules on top of horticultural greenhouses.

DLR develops a general model for agrivoltaic concepts that considers the effect of decreased intensity and altered spectrum on crop yields. Within the internship you will assembly and improve the monitoring system of an experimental test site for a demonstration agrivoltaic greenhouse in Almería (Spain). You will support the installation of different meteorological sensors to investigate microclimate, rear-side irradiance and albedo under the PV panels.

You will perform the following tasks:

  • Improvement of the design of the experimental test site
  • Installation of several meteorological sensors in a test greenhouse
  • Implementation of data acquisition with data loggers and a data base
  • Implementation of quality control method for the measurements
  • Coupling of the data to the agrivoltaic model
  • Evaluation of first results

You will be integrated into our diverse and highly motivated team in the “Solar Energy Meteorology group” located in Almería (Spain). An experienced colleague will closely work together with you and support you throughout the entire work. The project will be aligned with the responsible professor of your university.

Your qualifications:

  • You are looking for an internship in the field of physics, engineering, meteorology, energy technology or similar
  • You convince us with above-average study results and in the ideal case knowledge on solar technology or meteorology
  • You enjoy hands-on work in the field and have an eye for goal-oriented problem solving
  • You are used to work in a structured way and continuous improvement drives you
  • You have some programming experience (e.g. in Matlab or Python) and have basic knowledge about data processing and analysis
  • English language skills are necessary for studying scientific literature and communicating with the team

Your benefits:

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalleled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy places great value on a healthy family and work-life-balance as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders (f/m/x). Individuals with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the event their qualifications are equivalent to those of other candidates.
