One of the main purposes of the Galileo Competence Centre is the suitability analyses of future technologies for next generations of GNSS. The main goal is to provide a sound suggestion for improving the system. This can either be an enhancement within the ground or space segment and be of local or global effect.
The department of technology transfer and implementation is responsible of technical realization, verification and validation for such projects. Along the way a make or buy analyses and decision has to be made. Once the prototype is available suitable test campaigns are conducted. Such projects are joined undertakings with partners from DLR institutes or industry to reach the qualification status for the mission.
The tasks comprise specification, design, make or buy of elements, integration and testing. Comprehensive documentation for all steps along the process shall be generated as proof of readiness and enable demonstration and evaluation of results against mission goals and other pre-defined requirements under real conditions.
One other aspect is the theoretical analyses of already existing technologies for enhancements. This does not need to materialize in real prototypes and can also be conducted in the form of studies, concepts or papers.

Provision of hard- and software for data transfer and digital signal processing from specification to acceptance
  • Definition of requirements for data and signal chains, based on mission profiles and goals, e.g. requirements on signal and data generation, signal structure and dissemination chain, interfaces or reception and post-processing
  • Definition and specification of defining parameters and continuous adaptation, based on laboratory results, which shall be interpreted in relation to the mission goals. For instance, methods to minimize transmission errors, spoofing and/or jamming.
  • Data protocol implementation and digital Signal Processing following standards, e.g. RF/HF for Satellite Communications, using Matlab, Simulink or similar. The task includes implementation and validation of the complete chain using models and suitable tests
  • Development and qualification of new, complex, flight hardware with innovative ideas and consideration of current state of scientific knowledge
  • conceptual analyses and design of short and long term test campaigns including rist evaluation
  • Definition, modelling and coordination of interfaces, by use of C/C++/Python/MATLAB. This will be an interdisciplinary task jointly conducted with other groups internal and external of GK
  • ... and other activities
Technology Transfer from paper study to prototype
  • study of scientific publications for new developments and discoveries suitable for GNSS 
  • transforming theoretical findings in technical concepts for suggestions to head of department for new projects
  • Definition of statement of works for suppliers based on the agreed work break down
  • defining the development and testing environment for qualification and acceptance 
  • ... and other activities

Your qualifications:

  • university master degree in telecommunications engineering
  • experience in the design and development of prototypes in theory and practice in the area of science
  • proven record of more than 3 years of working experience, preferably in space technology sector, in definition, design, development of radio and high frequency signal generation, transmission and processing from theory to practical use
  • working experience for defining and implementing data protocols in HW and SW based on mission goals and analyses
  • high degree of personal responsibility in former or current position for defining, designing, selection and verification of PCBs (printed circuit boards)
  • experience on HDL Coder and FPGA programming with MATLAB / SIMULINK / similar
  • experience with optical telecommunication engineering, e.g. laser communication and free-space-optical standards, IMWP (integrated microwave-photonics)
  • systems and requirement engineering experience for small assemblies
  • fluent in English (spoken and written)
  • willingness for occasional business trips, mostly in Germany
  • willingness to apply for security clearance
  • experience in the area of AIT (Assembly, Integration and Testing) and related Hard- and Software, e.g. EGSEs (Electrical Ground Support Equipment) and SCOEs (Satellite Check-Out Equipment) is beneficial
  • experience in Python and/or C/C++ are considered an asset
