The safe and secure operation of critical infrastructures is essential for the economic prosperity and stability of countries and societies. The Institute for the Protection of Terrestrial Infrastructures is dedicated to this task. We aim to develop concepts, methods and technologies that serve to assess and improve the resilience of infrastructures pursuing a holistic approach considering human and technical aspects as well as an overarching systemic view. The Department “Digital Twins of Infrastructures” will model and simulate complex networked infrastructures at different levels of abstraction and in sector couplings. Being fed with real-time data, the digital twins will be run within a big data platform and interact with humans. This way Digital Twins shall enable improved situational awareness as well as the analysis and optimization of the resilience of terrestrial infrastructures.

As part of a research project, models for the representation of urban actors (e.g. people, transportation means, relevant infrastructures) and methods for the realistic simulation of their behavior as well as relationships among them (e.g. current status, movements within the environment, user’s activities including dependencies with other infrastructures  such as energy and water-related one) in dynamic urban crisis situations are to be developed. With the help of multi-modal real data and approaches from machine learning, existing modeling approaches should be ad-hoc defined or extended so that they can reflect crisis situations more realistically. The results of this work will be integrated into a digital twin for urban areas, which will serve as a tool for support in urban crisis situations.

As a scientific employee within a project team, you asked to conduct analysis and assessment of scientific procedures in the described area. You will be responsible for data management, software engineering and evaluation including planning and execution of measurement campaigns. You contribute to publications of the results in scientific journals as well as at international conferences.

The above described work will be performed in cooperation with TU Darmstadt, thus offering you the opportunity for a PhD thesis.

Your qualifications:

  • university degree (master's/diploma) in a natural science field (e.g. computer science, physics, mathematics) or an engineering field (e.g. electrical engineering), preferably with a focus on computer-aided methods
  • very good knowledge in: agent based modeling and simulation, machine learning methods
  • very good programming skills, preferably in C/C++, Java, Python, Matlab, Linux
  • willingness to do a PhD thesis
  • independent and result-oriented way of working
  • openness for interdisciplinary approaches
  • very good communication and cooperation skills as well as the ability to work in a team
  • very good knowledge of the German and English language, both written and spoken
  • practical experience in the use of development processes for software development desirable
  • experience in agile working methods desirable
