The optical communication group of DLR’s Institute of Communications and Navigation develops experimental laser communication systems for optical data links between airborne carriers such as airplanes or satellites and optical ground stations. Optical signals are usually amplified by the use of erbium doped fiber amplifiers in order to achieve optical output powers of several Watts. Commercially available driver circuits are mainly based on linear circuits, which results on low efficiency. This is critical for the use in satellites.
In order to design these amplifiers as power efficient as possible, a switched laser diode current driver should be developed.
