Developing Quantum Machine Learning Based Parametrizations for Climate Models

During your PhD you will utilize high-resolution ICON simulations (large eddy simulations – LES and cloud resolving simulations) to develop a quantum machine learning parameterization, and will implement the new parameterization into ICON. This will allow you to work with cutting-edge technologies to improve climate projections and ultimately help with the adaption to and mitigation of climate change.

  • Development of quantum machine learning techniques that can learn subgrid processes in coarse resolution state information
  • Implementation into the general circulation model ICON
  • Performing corresponding ICON-QML simulations
  • Evaluation of the resulting ICON-QML with the Earth System Model Evaluation Tool (ESMValTool)
  • Application of ICON-QML to a specific use case (e.g. impact of ship emissions on atmosphere and climate)
  • Documentation of the results and software

The PhD students will be part of the Earth System Model Evaluation and Analysis Department at DLR-IPA. The department is strongly linked to international research activities within the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP), with substantial contributions to the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP), and also involved in the European Lab for Learning & Intelligent Systems (ELLIS). Your qualifications:

  • Master/diploma or equivalent degree in physics, mathematics, computer science or similar field with adequate educational background for a PhD thesis in physics
  • excellent programming skills (preferably python)
  • experience in machine learning
  • experience in atmospheric physics and climate modelling is an advantage
  • knowledge and/or interest in quantum computing
  • excellent analytical skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • enthusiasm, motivation and creativity
  • fluency in English (written and spoken)
