Within DLR's Quantumcomputing Initiative the Institute of Data Science starts a cooperation project with industry to study the potential of hybrid Quantum-High-Performance-Computing for a selected industry-relevant use case. The concrete goal is to develop, apply und evaluate a hybrid algorithm that combines elements of classical high-performance-computing and machine learning with so-called "quantum machine learning" for the purpose of anomaly detection and in combination with causal inference. To this end the project will also establish a hybrid computing infrastructure that combines classical computers with quantum computers or simulators.

For this project we are searching for a candidate with experience in machine learning and experience or interest in quantum computing in general and quantum machine learning in particular. Considering the growing importance and enormous potential of quantum computing, this position offers an exceptional opportunity for qualification. In addition, the industry collaboration will give the opportunity to build a valuable network.

The position is assigned to the "Causal Inference" working group. This group develops theoretical foundations, algorithms, and accessible software tools for causal inference and machine learning and closely works with domain experts. Causal inference is a challenging and promising research field in artificial intelligence and its application to a broad range of domains will have a high impact both to advance science and to address topics of critical importance for the society. The core methodological topics include causal inference and causal discovery for spatio-temporal dynamical systems, machine learning, deep learning, and nonlinear time series analysis.

Your tasks include:

  • literature review to follow the developments within the field of quantum machine learning
  • analysis and assessment of existing algorithms for anomaly detection and causal inference with respect to how these can be extended to hybrid algorithms by combination with quantum machine learning
  • development and implementation of respective hybrid algorithms
  • application and systematic evaluation of the hybrid algorithms on telemetry data
  • collaboration and coordination with other project members

Your qualifications:

  • Master in physics, computer science, mathematics or a related field of study
  • multiyear experience in independent and autonomous work on complex research tasks
  • proven practical experience in machine learning
  • good knowledge of software development in Python
  • fluency in written and oral English
  • interest to work within an industry collaboration
  • willingness to approve a security check according to SÜG
  • special knowledge and multiyear working experience in the fields of quantum computing and quantum machine learning desirable
  • strong communication skills desirable
  • PhD in physics, computer science, mathematics or a related field desirable
  • knowledge of anomaly detection and causal inference is a plus
  • fluency in written and oral German is a plus
