Type of employment

Full-time (part-time possible)

At the Institute of Communication and Navigation of the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR), the Nautical Systems department at the Neustrelitz site develops and tests new technologies for land-based and on-board assistance in the navigation of vessels. You will be part of the team dealing with the technological and scientific challenges of determining a reliable maritime traffic situation picture. Your work will focus on building a softwarebased, modular research, development and demonstration platform. You will conduct research in the field of cooperative maritime traffic situation detection and contribute to the testing and validation of sensor fusion-based algorithms for reliable traffic situation using real data. As far as compatible with the operational processes, we offer you the possibility to carry out your work proportionally under the conditions of mobile working. In addition, you can organise your working hours flexibly, taking into account a core working time.

Your tasks will specifically include:

  • You will deal with the identification, implementation, testing and evaluation of algorithmic improvements to increase the reliability, accuracy and performance of sensor fusion methods using radar and AIS (Automatic Identification System) data.
  • You will develop improved algorithms for the fusion and intersection of radar images using methods from computer vision (object detection, object tracking).
  • You will be responsible for the development of a demonstrator including a graphical user interface to present the added value of the developed methods.
  • You will be involved in the scientific and technical planning, implementation and evaluation of measurement campaigns (experimental testing).
  • You document, present and defend your development results in the form of technical reports, scientific publications and conference contributions.
  • You will participate technically in the preparation of project proposals.

Your qualifications:

  • You have completed a scientific university degree (diploma or master's degree) in mathematics, physics, electrical engineering, computer science, informatics or in comparable fields with a grade of good or better.
  • You already have experience in the field of localisation technologies or in dealing with systems and sensors (e.g. AIS, radar, LiDAR) from the maritime sector.
  • You have good to very good programming skills in Python or in object-oriented programmingunder C++.
  • You have very good English skills (spoken and written) and good German skills.
  • An independent, creative and goal-oriented way of working is one of your personal characteristics.
  • Experience in the design and operation of databases is advantageous.
  • Ideally, you have experience with classical methods such as support vector machines (SVM).
  • Ideally, you have relevant experience in computer vision (especially knowledge of program libraries such as OpenCV) or in machine learning methods (Deep Neural Networks).
  • Experience in writing journal articles and technical documentation is desirable.

Your benefits:

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalleled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy places great value on a healthy family and work-life-balance as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders (f/m/x). Individuals with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the event their qualifications are equivalent to those of other candidates.
