The focus of the DLR Institute for Data Science in Jena is to find solutions for the major challenges of the digitalisation age. The research focuses on the areas of data extraction and mobilisation, data management and preparation, and data analysis and intelligence.

In this position you will support the DLR project MaTiC-M (Methods and Technologies for an intelligent Circularity of Materials) which centres around enabling a circular economy in different industrial areas. Your tasks include the development of methods and tools to trace components along their entire lifecycle and to share the gathered data with authorized stakeholders. In particular, this involves connecting physical and digital assets and the development of provenance models to enable fine-granular data-access policies

Your tasks:

  • literature research and identifying state-of-the-art approaches in the area of provenance models, identification of physical assets, and modular digital signatures
  • development of modular provenance models based on W3C’s PROV to support fine-grained data access restrictions
  • design methods for documenting authorship of entries in the provenance graph
  • development of methods to trace physical objects and connect them to their digital shadows
  • design and implementation of demonstrator for the evaluation of the developed approaches. This includes a state-of-the-art software engineering and documentation for both developers and users
  • identification of new research challenges in related areas
  • publication and presentation of results at national and international conferences and within the project consortium

Your qualifications:

  • completed academic university degree in Computer Science or related areas (e.g., data science). Alternatives are other areas with a focus on provenance management.
  • basic experience in independently addressing complex research challenges
  • proven programming skills (e.g., JavaScript, Python or Java.)
  • joy of working in a scientific environment
  • advanced skills in both written and spoken English
  • basic skills in both written and spoken German
  • willingness to travel (national/international)
  • ideally experience in working with provenance data and related models (e.g., W3C’s PROV)
  • applied experience working with knowledge graphs and related technologies (e.g., RDF and SPARQL) is a plus
  • experience in GUI and UX design and implementation is desirable
