The industry and electricity sectors generate around 63 % of global greenhouse gas emissions, which primarily come from burning fossil fuels such as coal, natural gas and oil. Would you like to contribute to the decarbonization of the industry and power grid? Come join our journey towards a more sustainable world.

The Institute of Engineering Thermodynamics at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) with more than 200 employees conducts research in the field of efficient heat and electricity storage and future energy conversion technologies. DLR plays a leading role in Europe and the world in the development of innovative energy storage technologies to accelerate the energy transition in energy-intensive sectors.

At the Department of Thermal Process Technology, we develop efficient and innovative technologies – from the very basic idea up to its application – for a sustainable heat supply at all temperature levels, aiming to reach more flexibility and higher share of renewable energy integration in the industry and power sector.

Surrounded by a dynamic and interdisciplinary environment, where you can explore your ideas and research interests, in the group of Thermal Systems with Phase Change, we are looking for a numerical simulation enthusiast.

In your doctoral studies you will:

  • numerically optimize isentropic thermal energy storage systems and their operation in coupled systems, such as Power – to – Heat and Power – to – Heat – to - Power systems
  • You will present your results in the research team, at international conferences and in scientific articles
  • the supervision of students during their Bachelor and Master thesis also belongs to your field of activities

The position is based at the Institute of Engineering Thermodynamic in Stuttgart. Flexible working hours and mobile workplace concepts are part of our everyday life.

Your qualifications:

  • You have successfully completed your scientific university studies in process engineering, energy engineering, mechanical engineering or similar.
  • You are enthusiastic about the topic of sustainable heat supply for industrial processes and bring knowledge in energy technology, thermal process engineering or a related field.
  • You have good knowledge of thermodynamic cycles
  • You have already gained experience in computational fluid dynamics (CFD)
  • You have already gained some experience in the field Modeling and simulation of engineering systems, for example with MATLAB and Simulink or similar.
  • it is also advantageous if you have already gained experience in the application of numerical optimization methods
  • You are a team player, creative, and able to work independent and self-motivated
  • You are fluent in spoken and written in both, in English and German

Your benefits:

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalleled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy places great value on a healthy family and work-life-balance as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders (f/m/x). Individuals with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the event their qualifications are equivalent to those of other candidates.
