Scientific work and project work on the development of new ceramic materials, their integration in components such as solar reactors and prototype plants

Starting date

Duration of contract

3 years

Remuneration

up to the German TVöD 13

Type of employment

Full-time (part-time possible)

At DLR, processes and plant technology are being developed to produce "solar fuels" such as hydrogen, synthesis gas or methanol by means of concentrated solar radiation in high-temperature processes, which also include recycling processes, metallurgical processes and solar gas-solid reactions. These processes include, for example, the reforming of hydrocarbons, thermochemical processes for splitting water, the recycling of aluminium scrap or the solar production of cement and clinker.

DLR's central activities in this context are the development and evaluation of such processes as well as the elaboration and evaluation of technologies for the integration of solar hightemperature heat and solar electricity in corresponding pilot and demonstration plants. The services and work results of the DLR Institute of Future Fuels (FF) contribute to making a rational and environmentally friendly energy supply technically and economically possible.

You will be part of an interdisciplinary, multinational research team of materials scientists, chemical and materials engineers and have access to state-of-the-art chemical and ceramic laboratory facilities and a broad infrastructure of analysis and characterisation of material properties available at the DLR site in Cologne-Porz-Wahn. You will use these to develop and characterise materials.

You will work in a team to find technical solutions for integrating these materials into prototypes and using them to carry out processes that generate solar hydrogen or ammonia, for example. You will conduct scientific studies and process analyses in the field of solar process engineering and fuel production. You will work in international project teams.

Your qualifications:

  • completed university studies (Master/Diploma) in materials science, materials physics, chemistry, physical chemistry, solid state physics or similar.
  • experience with materials for high temperature applications
  • experience with the characterisation and synthesis of ceramic materials,
  • experience with numerical modelling and simulation of material properties
  • experience with solids and fluids
  • experience in thermodynamics, heat transfer and fluid dynamics
  • independence, ability to work in a team and cooperate, interdisciplinary cooperation, commitment and willingness to learn
  • very good oral and written communication skills in German and English
  • desirable: doctorate or PhD
  • desirable: experience in international working groups

Your benefits:

Look forward to a fulfilling job with an employer who appreciates your commitment and supports your personal and professional development. Our unique infrastructure offers you a working environment in which you have unparalleled scope to develop your creative ideas and accomplish your professional objectives. Our human resources policy places great value on a healthy family and work-life-balance as well as equal opportunities for persons of all genders (f/m/x). Individuals with disabilities will be given preferential consideration in the event their qualifications are equivalent to those of other candidates.
