On Saturday, October 15th, 2022, the regional event “Nacht der kreativen Köpfe” took place in Cottbus. Different research institutions, companies and projects presented themselves to the public at 21 locations distributed in the whole city.
The DLR Institute of Electrified Aero Engines opened its doors for this annual event for the first time and presented itself with the theme "Take-off into a sustainable future". More than 520 visitors found their way to the newly occupied office in Cottbus and were informed about innovative technologies for a more climate-friendly, quieter aviation of the future. Exciting hands-on experiments on electrochemistry, power electronics, electromagnetism and acoustics illustrated the technical processes in an electrified powertrain of an aircraft. The guests were able to put their knowledge to the test in a quiz. In a series of lectures on electric flight, they learned about the issues that the scientists at the institute are dealing with. Topics such as acoustics and thermal management were discussed and also real projects were presented.
Visiting children were enthused by the crafts workshop. Here they folded various paper airplanes, which could then be tested regarding flight behavior and range on the analogical marked runway along the corridor of the institute and further evaluated based on appearance. The new Institute of Electrified Aero Engines in Cottbus makes a significant contribution to the structural change in Brandenburg towards a high-tech region for future aeronautical engineering.
