Commissioning of the CoBra on 07.05.2024

The Institute of low carbon industrial processes and its department for High Temperature Heat Pumps are thrilled to report that our reverse Brayton High Temperature Heat Pump (CoBra) went on full operation on the 7th of May 2024. The team has been successfully commissioning each heat pump component since October 2023 and has recently managed to run the heat pump in a closed loop, thus officially finishing its commissioning phase. The heat pump uses air as it working fluid and  generated heat up to 220°C at its sink and cold at -18 °C at its source.

The heat pump now enters its full experimentation phase, in which we will test its operational limits and study different fluid inventory control concepts for its capacity modulation. We expect to reach temperatures at the sink of at least 250°C (possibly 300°C), and -40°C in the source.
