Rising energy prices - How can the restructuring of the German economy succeed?

A conference at the Leibniz Institute for Economic Research Halle (IWH) on March 9, 2023, will address this question.

Tackling the climate crisis in all its facets represents one of the greatest challenges for business and society worldwide in the coming decades. The Ukraine conflict is creating additional pressure to act. Both are currently reflected in high energy prices and great uncertainties. The conference will address the question of how the German economy must adapt to these challenges, but also what opportunities can arise from the transformation process.

Professor Dr. Armin Willingmann, Minister for Science, Energy, Climate Protection and the Environment of the State of Saxony-Anhalt, will speak at the opening (link to press release). Scientists from the IWH and other research institutions will then present their latest research results:

  • Professor Dr. Veronika Grimm, Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nuremberg, Director of the "Laboratory for Experimental Research Nuremberg", Member of the German Council of Economic Experts: "Competitiveness in times of geopolitical change".
  • Professor Dr. Oliver Holtemöller, IWH and Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg: "Macroeconomic and Regional Consequences of the Energy Crisis in Germany"
  • Professor Michael Koetter, Ph.D., IWH and Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg: "Policy Cycles and Energy Use"
  • Professor Dr. Steffen Müller, IWH and Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg: "Economic Consequences of the Gas Price Increase for German Industry" (Methodological Notes on the Study)
  • Dr. sc. Panagiotis Stathopoulos, German Aerospace Center e. V.: "Regenerative High Temperature Heat - Key Technology for CO2 Reduction in the Industrial Sector". >>

In the afternoon, our guests from science, associations and infrastructure institutions will discuss the question "Energy transition in industry - How can it succeed?" The panel discussion will be moderated by Anja Heyde.
