Visit of the Lord Mayor to DLR in Cottbus
On April 17, 2023, the Lord Mayor of Cottbus, Tobias Schick, visited the German Aerospace Center (DLR). On this occasion, he was introduced to the DLR Institute for Electrified Aerospace Propulsion, the DLR Institute of Low-Carbon Industrial Processes and the DLR_School_Lab.
Mayor Schick learned about current projects at the DLR Institute for Electrified Aerospace Propulsion Systems. The institute, which will officially open in March 2022, is conducting research into alternatives to conventional types of propulsion and their potential for use in civil aviation in order to make it lower-emission and thus more climate-friendly in the future. The institute's unique selling point is its holistic approach to future hybrid-electric or fully electrified propulsion systems.
At the DLR Institute of Low-Carbon Industrial Processes, scientists gave Tobias Schick a demonstration of the new "CoBra" pilot plant. CoBra is a high-temperature heat pump in which a heat output temperature of 300 degrees Celsius can be achieved - a temperature that is sufficient for many industrial sectors. Heat pumps provide an alternative to fossil fuels. The Cottbus institute is researching how high-temperature heat pumps can also be used in energy-intensive industries and is thus making a significant contribution to the heat transition in industry.
Schick then visited the DLR_School_Lab BTU Cottbus-Senftenberg, which is operated by the Brandenburg University of Technology in cooperation with DLR. Here, students from all types of schools learn about cutting-edge research in the fields of aero- and fluid dynamics, space travel, energy, electrified aerospace propulsion and low-carbon industrial processes in nine fascinating hands-on experiments. The grand opening took place in March this year.
