Visit of the Mayor of Cottbus to the DLR Institute of Low-Carbon Industrial Processes

On August 26, 2021, the Mayor of Cottbus, Holger Kelch, visited the DLR Institute of Low-Carbon Industrial Processes of the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Against the backdrop of the energy transition, the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions is one of the greatest challenges of the future. For this, an economically viable transformation of industrial processes into low-carbon technologies also plays a decisive role. To this end, the DLR Institute of Low-Carbon Industrial Processes, founded in 2019 at sites in Cottbus and Zittau, is researching the industrial use of high-temperature heat pumps.

Mayor Kelch learned about the CoBra pilot plant in Cottbus. The name CoBra is derived from Cottbus and the Brayton process of thermodynamics, according to which the plant is operated. The scientists are using the pilot plant to conduct extensive research on high-temperature heat pumps. Their goal is to advance the heat transition in industry with innovative technology and to demonstrate a way to decarbonize energy-intensive industrial sectors. The CoBra pilot plant is currently under construction and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2021.
