The op­ti­mal propul­sion con­cept for an air­craft de­pends on its range and size. Con­fig­u­ra­tions with dis­tribut­ed drives (rear) as well as tur­bo­prop and tur­bo­fan drives can be seen here. These can be op­er­at­ed via a hy­brid-elec­tri­cal sys­tem by means of hy­dro­gen fu­el cells in com­bi­na­tion with the di­rect com­bus­tion of hy­dro­gen or SAF. As of now, eval­u­a­tions sug­gest that the tech­nol­o­gy op­tions based on hy­dro­gen and SAF are equal­ly as promis­ing.
