In LEROSH, craftsmen and researchers jointly demonstrate how the use of simple but intelligent robotic tools leads to new groundbreaking applications which enable the craft sector to offer significantly improved services. In particular, robot-assisted surface finishing processes in single-piece production are being considered here.

Project Details

The aim of the project is to research and develop learning robotic surface finishing technology for the craft sector, and hardware and software modules suitable for this purpose, which could be used as the later basis of an AI-supported robot system solution. The envisioned system should have greatly improved operational capability, for which learned so-called 'robot skills' and an intelligent, sensory grinding end effector could serve. With the help of these components, workpieces could be machined in the automated surface finishing process without the need for complex programming of individual work steps. This would give the system the character of a flexibly deployable tool. The possibilities of a strongly simplified and intuitive operability are to be investigated in cooperation of craftsmen and developers also on the basis of concrete applications and experimental UI/UX design. The use of robotics should thus also be made possible for craftsmen without additional training in the future. As a result, in the mid-term, craftsmen could use a low-threshold and intuitively operable system with which they can independently train robots and implement specific tasks in lot size 1.
