From June 14 to 16, the "HSM & Cluster FS" (Hierarchical Storage Management and Cluster File Systems) Conference 2023 took place at Gut Ulrichshusen. The event, which takes place every two years at the Mecklenburg Lake District, focuses on highly specialized software solutions for professional archiving of data volumes in the petabyte range. 60 participants and attendees, high-ranking representatives and developers of the market-leading HSM vendors, as well as well-known experienced users from German-speaking countries and the United States took advantage of the conference to exchange ideas. The presentation and discussion of successor solutions to Oracle HSM (SAMFS) met with particular interest. Many operators of long-term data archives are affected by the discontinuation of the Oracle software and are now forced to make fundamental changes to their systems, which entail considerable migration effort. The use of interfaces for archiving data from cloud systems was also an important topic at the conference. The user presentations referred, among other things, to the storage and processing of research data in the Helmholtz Association (DLR, KIT), as in the presented case of the German Satellite Data Archive (D-SDA) of DFD. However, it has long since become apparent that HSM solutions are no longer essential only for mass data in earth observation, but are also relevant in the insurance and media industries, medicine, and the automotive industry.
Once again, the HSM & Cluster FS Conference 2023 was able to successfully promote the exchange of knowledge and the networking of HSM providers, developers and users. After the pandemic break, the conference will take place again as usual, alternating with the Storage Conference every year.
