Development of DEMMIN
Start of cooperation with interested farmers of the Demmin region with the German Aerospace Center Neustrelitz.
Integration of the site into the HyEurope campaign (2003 - 2009) and consolidation of the hyperspectral monitoring by declaring DEMMIN as a permanent test site for agriculture.
Installation of an automatic weather measurement network (15 stations) to record agrometeorological variables in parallel with remote sensing monitoring. The measurement network is based on ADCON telemetry technology. The funding was provided by the LEADER+ program.
Start of cooperation with DWD (Deutscher Wetterdienst) Braunschweig in the interpretation of agrometeorological variables. In this context, DWD provided AMBER simulations to DLR.
The AgriSAR 2006 measurement campaign aimed at obtaining ground truth data over the 2006 growing season. The data were used for i.) Quality control of remote sensing based algorithms for soil moisture, biomass and extraction of chlorophyll content. In addition, the data were used to develop new algorithms and optimize the design of future satellite instruments (Sentinel missions). The AgriSAR 2006 project was funded by the European Space Agency ESA .
More than 150 scientific and technical participants from 15 national and international institutions (Italy: National Research Council, University of Naples, Spain: University of Valencia, University of Alicante, Belgium: Ghent University, Netherlands: International Institute for Geoinformation Science and Earth Observation, Denmark: Technical University of Denmark, United Kingdom: Canfield University, Germany: Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences, German Aerospace Center, Kiel University, Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, University of Jena, Free University of Berlin, Leibniz Centre for Agricultural Landscape Research (ZALF), German Weather Service (DWD)). In addition to ground truth retrieval, a radar system (E-SAR) of DLR on a DO228 and a hyperspectral sensor AHS of INTA as well as a hyperspectral sensor CASI of the Canadian company ITRES Research on a CASA-212-200 of the Spanish National Institute of Aerospace Technology (INTA) were deployed.
With the support of the Institute of Robotics and Mechatronics, the automatic weather measurement network was expanded from the automatic weather measurement network with 15 stations to the automatic environmental measurement network with 18 stations. Measurement parameters: Wind direction and speed, humidity, pressure and temperature, rainfall amount and duration, shortwave irradiance and counter-irradiance, longwave irradiance and counter-irradiance, leaf moisture, soil temperature and moisture at different depths.
The DEMMIN test site will be a calibration and validation site under The USGS Remote Sensing Technologies Project (CEOS and QA4EO - A qualitative Assurance Framework for Earth Observation).
DLR becomes a member of the TERENO initiative of the Helmholtz centers: FZJ, UFZ, GFZ, KIT, HMGU, DLR. The test site will be integrated into the TERENO Observatory Northeast Germany.
With the support of FZJ, a lysimeter hexagon (6 parallel lysimeters) based on the UMS technology will be established in DEMMIN. The environmental monitoring network will be extended by 4 additional environmental monitoring stations and by an eddy covariance tower
Supported by DLR, GFZ establishes 20 environmental monitoring stations, <60 soil moisture sensors for measuring environmental parameters and soil moisture, and a crane facility in the urban forest of DEMMIN as a contribution to the TERENO initiative in Demmin to acquire hyperspectral measurements for the identification of forest in remote sensing data. The data transmission of the environmental monitoring station and soil moisture sensors are hosted by DLR.
In the context of various national and international projects, a wide variety of scientific issues have been addressed on aspects of satellite mission validation (e.g. TET /FireBird), aspects of energy supply for smart cities (e.g. OrPHEuS, PreFlex), agricultural issues (e.g. PhenoS, Techs4Times), methods of data provision with low-cost measurement techniques (e.g. iTERI, DiDL) or aspects of regional water and energy budgets (e.g. WETSCAPE).
DLR is invited by the CEOS JECAM initiative to present the DEMMIN test site. The site will be designed according to the international requirements of the experimental 2017.
The DEMMIN test site will be declared a JECAM monitoring site. A team from different institutions (e.g. DLR, Uni Würzburg, Uni Jena, Uni Halle, University of Applied Sciences Neubrandenburg) joins together to form a monitoring team to participate in the annual vegetation campaigns of the JECAM initiative.
Already with the start of the operation of the DEMMIN test site, student activities were carried out within the framework of measurement campaigns for data acquisition of the test site for scientific work (e.g. dissertations, master and bachelor theses) or scientific projects (e.g. TET /FireBird, OrPHEuS, PreFlex, PhenoS, Techs4Times, iTERI, DiDL, WETSCAPE).
As part of the BMLE initiative "Digitalization - Experimental Fields", the AgriSens DEMMIN 4.0 project was launched. The project involves the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) Potsdam (coordinator), the German Aerospace Center, the Julius Kühn Institute Braunschweig, the German Weather Service, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Friedrich Schiller University Jena, Julius Maximilian University Würzburg, as well as Neubrandenburg University of Applied Sciences and regional farms in the Demmin area of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Duration of the project: three years.
