FireBIRD in DLR SpaceBlog

FireBIRD is an earth observation mission with the primary goal of monitoring fires from space. It involves the detection and measurement of so-called high-temperature events and the provision of remote sensing science data for research at DLR and for external partners.

It is organized as a research and development project under the auspices of DLR’s Aerospace Research and Technology program division with solely science goals, and all aspects of the mission are under DLR control.

The space segment consists of the two satellites TET-1 (Technology Experiment Carrier) and BIROS (Berlin InfraRed Optical System). The TET-1 satellite has been circling Earth in a polar orbit since July 2012 and has successfully concluded the first part of its mission as a technology testing platform. The BIROS satellite has the same bus as TET-1, but is additionally equipped with a propulsion system for active attitude and orbit control. BIROS was launched on 22 June 2016 at 05:55 CEST. The main payload for both satellites is a multispectral camera system.

Fire disaster in California – DLR supports with FireBIRD data

15 November 2018
A, for the season, unusual drought lead to devastating forest fires in California. So far several hundred thousand people were evacuated and dozen deaths were registered. Butte County, located in Northern California, is especially affected. Satellite data has already been made available as part of the International Charter "Space and Major Disasters".

FireBIRD monitors forest fires in California

19 December 2017
Emergency services in the US state of California are still fighting fierce forest fires. Severe drought and strong winds have allowed the fires to spread. The FireBIRD (Fire Bispectral InfraRed Detector) mission run by the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) consists of a pair of satellites – TET-1 (Technology Experiment Carrier) and BIROS (Bispectral Infrared Optical System). These detect high-temperature events from space. On Sunday 10 December 2017 TET-1 registered a major seat of fire near the town of Ventura, north of Los Angeles, on the US Pacific coast. Further data was recorded over the days that followed.

Fires in Chile

31 January 2017
On January 24, 2017, the International Charter 'Space and Major Disasters' was activated for forest fires in Chile. The DLR/ZKI is responsible for the Project Management of this Charter Call and supports the ‘Chilean National Office of Emergency of the Interior Ministry’ (ONEMI) of Chile with the provision of satellite data and value added disaster information products.

FireBIRD mission provides data of recent fires in Israel and the West Bank

01 December 2017
On Tuesday, November 22, 2016, wildfires started in Israel and spread rapidly over the country on the following days. On November 25 at 11:25 UTC, DLR’s TET-1 satellite captured major hot spots in the region. TET-1 is one of the two satellites of the FireBIRD mission.

German TET-1 small satellite launched

On 22 July 2012 at 08:41:39 CEST, the first small German satellite in the ‘On-Orbit-Verification’ (OOV) programme was carried into orbit from the Cosmodrome in Baikonur, Kazakhstan by a Russian Soyuz launch vehicle. TET-1 is a technology testbed with 11 instruments on board that were operated in space for a year to confirm their reliability under space conditions.
