The Roll2Rail project is a part of the Horizon 2020 programme of the European Commission. One topic of the Roll2Rail project is the carbody, on which vehicle manufacturers, operators, academia and research institutes are working together. The department Vehicle Architectures and Lightweight Design Concepts brought in their expertise to analyse the lightweight potential of different carbody geometries in an early stage of the project.
In this context a method was developed which is based on the institute’s research activities in the publicly funded Next Generation Train project .The method, developed in the Roll2Rail project, allows the estimation and comparison of the lightweight potentials of different carbody geometries. For the carbody geometries, the positions and dimensions of doors, windows and underfloor pan were varied. Further analyses were carried out regarding suitable materials in different areas of the carbody, depending on the force flow and load paths in the structure.
