Based on fundamental experiments on core materials a method for applying sandwich structures in load-bearing components of road and rail vehicles is researched and developed. After material characterization, the material properties are applied to an analytical design method for sandwich composites. Generic sandwich elements with and without integrated trigger are validated in different load cases.
The results from the material test series, the sandwich tests and the component experiments are applied to numerical simulation, thus providing a faster development process in the future.
After that, the findings are shared with other departments of the institute where they are applied to vehicle structure components and further assessed on the in-house test benches of the institute.
