Total Airport Management (SESAR 2020 PJ04-W2 TAM)

The modernisation of air traffic management is one of the fundamental challenges of current air traffic research. The EU research programme Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) defines, develops and implements the measures necessary for increasing ATM performance and for evolving the intelligent European air transport system. The current SESAR 2020 programme, scheduled to run from 2016 to 2024 and with a budget of €1.6 billion, supports projects which provide solutions in four key areas: airport operations, network operations, air traffic services and technology development.

Within the project PJ04 Total Airport Management, solutions are being developed for the efficient utilisation of available resources and capacities at airports of widely differing sizes. The project is divided into two sub-projects (Solutions), the first of which primarily addresses the integration of airport processes into the ATM network, whilst the second focuses on processes at the airport. The emphasis is thereby placed upon processes and procedures which, with the help of an extended data exchange between the various stakeholders, lead to planning and approach strategies which are better coordinated with one another and, as a result, a more efficient use of the available resources.

In this project, the Institute of Flight Guidance is continuing the work on the cooperative management of airport processes which had already been initiated in the previous project. Together with the partners AVINOR, MUC, SINTEF and Leonardo, the focus is hereby placed on the definition and validation of what-if support within the framework of collaborative decision making (CDM). The Institute can thereby draw on many years of experience gained through research into TAM.

This project has received funding from the SESAR Joint Undertaking under the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 874472.
