KIEZ4-0 (Artificial Intelligence European Certification under Industry 4.0)

The national joint-research project KIEZ is aimed at creating a demonstrator that illustrates how artificial intelligence can be certified internationally in the future.

Applications based on artificial intelligence (AI) harbour a vast potential to implement processes more flexibly and with less outlay. As a result of their structure, however, special effort is required in order to be able to utilise them in aviation, which is characterised by a high safety standard. In KIEZ4-0, exemplary applications using artificial intelligence are to be developed and demonstrators are to be used to illustrate how these can also be certified for aviation in the future.

This will enable the identification of safety, certification and approval mechanisms which have the potential to be used for AI applications in aviation. Both conventional certification procedures established in aviation and those from other branches of industry, which already contain AI components, will be considered. These will subsequently be evaluated and their use demonstrated in a simulator tailored to the respective application.

In order to achieve these goals, a consortium of eight partners from the diverse disciplines of aviation, research, information technology, law and education has been formed as part of KIEZ4-0. Within the framework of the national aviation research programme, the possible steps required for the implementation of a certification are be taken in this joint project, not only on a national but also on an international level. For this purpose, the consortium is cooperating with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).

In collaboration with Deutsche Flugsicherungs GmbH (DFS), the Institute of Flight Guidance is identifying and developing certification concepts and verifying their application in a demonstrator. This will be implemented in the Air Traffic Management and Operations Simulator (ATMOS) of the Air Traffic Validation Center. It is intended to illustrate the benefits of the certification of an AI application for air traffic control.
