The international competition forces all manufacturers of new systems to increase innovation rate and to shorten time-to-market. Besides a high product quality, efficient development processes are required to achieve these goals. The conception stage represents the first development stage. Although trend-setting and cost-determining decisions are made in this stage, specialized conception methods as well as tools are hardly available. Instead, temporary work outputs are produced by ad-hoc methods applying non-specialized tools like Excel or mind maps. Those data outputs are hard to maintain and prevent a seamless transition to the preliminary design stage due to their lack of formality (see "PowerPoint Engineering").
The Design and Validation Methods Group elaborates systems design methods and tools for the conception stage and provides test rigs for the early validation of the designs.
