The project SyMo4PD (standardization of a data format and a reference ontology for semantic interoperability in model-driven design processes) is a project funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology within the program "Transfer of R & D results through standardization" with a term from November 2015 to November 2016. The project partners are Bauhaus Luftfahrt and DLR.
The developers of technical systems today face the major challenge of having to master the increasing complexity of technical systems despite high cost pressure. The development of such systems more than ever, depends on the cooperation of interdisciplinary teams, because neither the scope of required work nor the necessary expertise can be provided by individual developers. In order to manage the development of these systems, different approaches like systems engineering and the concurrent engineering can be used. In addition, the Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) can be used, which creates a holistic view of the system, thus achieving greater integration of the different disciplines.
The users are faced with the challenge of different models, terminology, software tools, and practices the necessary processes to match. The desire for a continuous development, which is based on a shared and coherent in itself model view is hampered. So are different and partly proprietary data formats in use, resulting in a smooth exchange of data is prevented. Also on the semantic level, an effective model exchange is difficult. The different disciplines each use their own classifications, detail views, and different accuracies in modeling, which hinders the formation of a distributed model.
DLR and Bauhaus Luftfahrt (BHL) develop a common solution for the described problems to carry out feasibility studies. The solution is based on an open meta model with an associated data exchange format and the use of reference ontologies. This should be presented in draft standardization.
