SynergIE project: Hybrid-electric propulsion systems enable more climate friendly air transport
22.11.2021 | Together with Airbus, Rolls-Royce and Bauhaus Luftfahrt e.V., the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt, DLR) has investigated the overall system of a hybrid-electric short-haul aircraft for up to 100 passengers. Electric propulsion units distributed across the wings improve the aerodynamics and thus significantly increase efficiency. The flight characteristics of the prototype have already been tested in the DLR AVES flight simulator.

Launch of the Drones4Good project: Humanitarian aid with uncrewed aircraft and artificial intelligence
08.02.2021 | In the event of a disaster, humanitarian aid organisations need to determine the extent of damage to buildings in the affected location and work out which transport routes are safe to use as quickly as possible – ideally in real time. Relief supplies must be delivered to inaccessible areas quickly and effectively. With these demands in mind, researchers from the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) are developing and testing new artificial intelligence (AI) technologies that enable drone-based analysis as part of the Drones4Good project.

Augmented reality assists helicopter pilots with demanding flight manoevreus at sea
02.02.2021 | Whether they are facing fog, rain or darkness, a high-sea landing on a ship deck under poor visibility conditions is a major challenge, even for experienced helicopter pilots. As part of the Helicopter Deck Landing Assistance (HEDELA) project, the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) is working with the aviation service of the German Federal Police to develop flight assistance systems that help pilots land safely and accurately on ships. Augmented reality glasses have now been used for the first time in flight tests with DLR’s FHS research helicopter.
