Future Sky Safety - EREA (Association of European Research Establishments in Aeronautics)
In the context of the joint research initiative "Future Sky Safety" European aeronautics research establishments are cooperating on the wake turbulence topic. Since late 2015 NLR, ONERA and DLR are shaping this cooperation. This comprises internal and public meetings for exchange on wake vortex research results and state-of-the-art. An essential aspect is the development of ideas for future research activities, involving external stakeholders. Several wake vortex topics for cooperation/ coordination of future research have been identified.
On 8 JUNE 2016 a particularly fruitful public international workshop was held at the German Aerospace Center DLR in Braunschweig on the topic of wake vortex. Various European research establishments presented their related research activities. This was complemented by key notes from EASA and Eurocontrol and an introduction to the Future Sky Safety coordination activities. Topics for future wake vortex work and cooperation were discussed constructively with 27 participants, with valuable input from Eurocontrol, EASA, industry, research establishments/ universities. Presentations are publicly available at the workshop website.
One aspect of the collaboration is to establish a specific literature overview for the selected cooperation topics.
1. Wake vortex dynamics/ simulation
2. Sensing/ detection of (wake) turbulence phenomena
3. Wake turbulence separation optimisation/ wake encounter severity assessment
