The Institute of Air Transport and Airport Research explores the development of the air transport sector at different geographic levels, from worldwide to regional, national and the individual airport level. Factors influencing airport and air transport development, such as capacity constraints and environmental policy measures are modeled, in order to obtain insights into current and possible future developments. These findings will help to evaluate and monitor the effectiveness of technical and policy measures.
Airport simulation studies are an indispensable part of airport research. These simulations are performed in close cooperation with more vehicle-oriented institutes for transport management at DLR in Braunschweig. Design and development of suitable support systems require the capability of modelling airport processes and to perform both fast-time and real-time simulations.
Research topics are the design and prototypical development of support systems for all the parties involved in airport operations. The work focuses on the processes for passengers, luggage, and cargo at the airport. The activities aim at integrating landside and airside processes into a Total Airport Management (TAM) system as well as managing intermodal transport at airports.
Air traffic analyses and forecasts are an essential and indispensable part of strategic planning in transport politics, transport management, and for transport companies. Thus, air traffic analyses and forecasts serve appropriate administrations in air transport politics to plan air transport systems according to the demand.
Within DLR, an institution traditionally dominated by engineering science, FW is the only department conducting research on air traffic economics. Interdisciplinary collaboration within and outside of DLR proofs again and again that economic expertise is demanded in a large number of research questions with regard to air transport and airports

Our activities in the field of aviation research aim at the long-term interpretation of strategic measures, either through changes in infrastructure, or regulatory measures involving the aviation system as a whole.
In airport research we focus on measures related to the tactical and operational area of collaborative airport management, through its interaction with passengers, and airports’ roles in linking land- and airside in the intermodal transport system.
