Since more than 10 years European CAEP modellers have discussed within the ANCAT MODELLING AND INTERDEPENDENCIES TASK GROUP (MITG) options to improve the competitiveness of European aviation modelling activities especially for the ICAO CAEP work. Meanwhile most of the models have been improved and connected in a few tool suites (EU: IMPACT, TEAM_Play, Clean Sky Technology Evaluator), enabling quicker and broader assessments on local or global level as well as the consideration of trade-offs. However, several shortcomings such as data & model access, funding schemes etc. seem still hindering the proper application and continuous improvement of such capabilities. The aim of an ongoing DG MOVE tender is to generate an inventory of European aviation-related models, to collect information of gaps and links to tool suites, to analyse the current European aviation environmental modelling capability against the background of internal and external requirements, and to provide recommendations to develop a durable setup of an European model capability for aviation. This activity is led by DLR and NLR in cooperation with consultants and researchers from Limited Skies, CERC, NAU and NTUA.
Initial findings and recommendations to support further discussions within MITG have been presented and discussed by more than 25 representatives from EASA, Eurocontrol, BAZL, BMVI as well as manufacturers, research institutions, universities and specialized consultants on a workshop hosted by DLR-Air Transport and Airport Research on 16-17 November, 2016.
