Capacity Constraints at Airports - Adaptation Strategies of the Airlines

9 September 2009

At large international hubs like London Heathrow and Frankfurt, the problem of capacity constraints is continuously growing. Forecasts predict an annual increase in demand in global air transport of about 5% for the next 20 years. Airlines operating in environments with limited capacity have to ask themselves how to tackle the increase in demand despite the limitations in capacity.

This study examined alternatives for airlines to guarantee their growth despite the restrictions in capacity. The following options were analyzed as possible strategies: trade-off between frequency and destinations, adaptation of aircraft size, building of strategical alliances, installation of a secondary hub.
