Topics and Projects
Below is a short description of the currently planned initial projects and topics for development:
COMPASSO
Optical quantum technologies can make a significant contribution to making satellite navigation systems such as the European Galileo much more robust and accurate in the future. For their long-term use in space, however, these technologies must withstand the harsh conditions of space. This is where the DLR's COMPASSO project, which began in 2021, comes in. As part of the project, novel optical clocks and laser terminals are being further developed for use in space and tested on the International Space Station (ISS).

Signal and Performance Monitoring
The purpose of this project is to monitor the reliability and quality of navigation signals, to detect errors promptly and to disseminate this information to applications.

Robust Precise Timing Facility
The project “Robust Precise Timing Facility” (RPTF) is to construct a robust timing device for Galileo for worldwide ground- and space-based time generation and distribution.

Optical Fibre Link
In this project it is planned to establish an optical link between various DLR departments at different locations, as well as with the following institutions: TUM (Technische Universität München), LMU (Ludwigs-Maximilians-Universität München), MPQ (Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenphysik, Garching) and PTB.

Model-based Systems Enginieering (MBSE)
Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) is based on formalized data models describing the requirements, structure and behaviour of a system. Changes to the different system aspects flow into an overall model, which enables automated plausibility tests and error analyses both in the early concept phase and in the later detailed design.

OTTEX-Pre
This project was submitted by the DLR institute for Communications and Navigation (IKN) following a call for tenders by ESA.

Service Volume Simulator
An internal DLR project to build a Service Volume Simulator (SVS). The SVS is a software simulation tool that reproduces the functional behaviour and performance parameters of satellite navigation systems.
