The avionics is the centrepiece of all space systems. All control tasks, mission data processing, energy generation and storage, as well as communication with ground control are carried out by the avionics system.

The department of System Analysis Space Segment researches and develops space systems (orbital and planetary) on a conceptual level taking into account technical, economic and socio-political aspects.

Space Launcher Systems Analysis
The Department of Space Launcher Systems Analysis (Systemanalyse Raumtransport; SART) at the Institute of Space Systems is responsible for the design and analysis of launcher systems. Areas of research include, not only spacecraft design, but also the design and analysis of propulsion systems. The ability to integrate the study of spacecraft and thrusters in this way places SART in a unique position within Germany.

The Department of Systems Engineering and Project Office deals with the development and implementation of complex space missions, and brings together the central technical and administrative skills in the fields of project management, system engineering, configuration and Assembly Integration and Testing (AIV) for project handling within the Institute of Space Systems.
