The MAIA project is a Feasibility Study of a Satellite-based Alarm System aiming at ensuring alert and information dissemination in case of emergencies/disaster. Effective dissemination of warnings in the few minutes around the impact of natural and manmade disasters has the potential to allow managing responses to minimize disaster losses and damages to people and property. The global alerting system proposed in the MAIA study goes beyond the currently available global scale disaster warning systems to citizens (mainly radio and TV). It will allow the broadcasting of alert messages over satellite to mobile devices despite of possible damages and overloads in the mobile terrestrial infrastructure, very probable in emergency scenarios.
