MAIA - Mobile Alert InformAtion system using satellites

The MAIA project is a Feasibility Study of a Satellite-based Alarm System aiming at ensuring alert and information dissemination in case of emergencies/disaster.
Effective dissemination of warnings in the few minutes around the impact of natural and manmade disasters has the potential to allow managing responses to minimize disaster losses and damages to people and property.
The global alerting system proposed in the MAIA study goes beyond the currently available global scale disaster warning systems to citizens (mainly radio and TV). It will allow the broadcasting of alert messages over satellite to mobile devices despite of possible damages and overloads in the mobile terrestrial infrastructure, very probable in emergency scenarios.

The picture below shows a preliminary high level architecture proposed by the MAIA study:

  • Benefits:
Real global alert and information system to mass market mobile devices
Independent from infrastructure damages in the area of the disaster
Increased potential penetration of alerting messages to any area where satellite coverage is available
  • This study is funded by ESA ARTES 1 Program
  • Challenges:
The major challenge of the MAIA system is to provide a system design that allows satellite signal reception in mass market mobile devices minimizing the required updates in the standard device.
