The main objective of this activity is to design and develop a software-only based Testbed implementing and fully validating key functions of the DVB-RCS2 standard. The Testbed is designed and implemented to provide manufacturers and researchers with a validated reference design of DVB-RCS2 sub-systems implementing key RCS2 functions. The reference design focuses on the RCS terminal functions. The hub functionality will be emulated as required for the validation of the terminal functions. The functional validation and testing results obtained in the project shall be reported to the DVB-RCS2 Working Group for possible contribution to the DVB-RCS2 Guidelines Documents. The reference design shall be made available to RCS terminal manufacturers.
The overall testbed will be composed of various PC in order to implement the functionalities of hub and satellite terminals (3) and realistically reproduce the behaviour of forward and return channel through a dedicated channel emulator.
Particular attention is dedicated to the new functionalities introduced with respect to native DVB-RCS, such as random access, new signalling tables, RLE and the overall protocol stack of higher layer (IP-based), also including PEP negotiation protocol.
The Testbed is designed and implemented to provide manufacturers and researchers with a validated reference design of DVB-RCS2 sub-systems implementing key functions. Such reference design shall mainly focus on the RCS terminal functions. The test bed will allow validation of the DVB-RCS2 protocol and functionality, including real-time operation within accuracy of in the order of 10 milliseconds. One of the outputs of the project will be a DVB-RCS2 terminal reference design covering higher layers and lower layers down to interface to the physical layer.
