Integrated COM/NAV Functionality for Sustainable LDACS Industrialization
Main goal of the project ICONAV was development and implementation of an industrial LDACS hardware demonstrator for lab testing. DLR together with the project partners Rohde & Schwarz GmbH & Co. KG, iAd GmbH, BPS GmbH, and the University of Passau optimized and supplemented the existing LDACS specification with respect to performance and industry requirements. In addition, a first data security concept and the extension of the communications system LDACS towards navigation have been developed. With that, a successful transfer of the LDACS research results to industry has been achieved.
In 2012, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) together with the manufacturer Rohde & Schwarz GmbH & Co. KG (R&S) initiated the project ICONAV within the German national research fund LuFo (Luftfahrt-Forschungsprogramm). Besides DLR and R&S the project team consists of two German SMEs (Small and Medium Enterprises), iAd GmbH and BPS GmbH, the R&S subsidiary company for security Rohde & Schwarz SIT GmbH, and the Institute of IT-Security and Security Law of the University of Passau. The goals of the project ICONAV (Integrated Communication and Navigation functionality for sustainable LDACS industrialization) are twofold: First, a fully functional LDACS demonstrator for lab testing as defined within the LDACS specification is developed and realized using industrial development methods. The development also includes data security measures to prevent eavesdropping or cyber-attacks. Second, an interface is developed and implemented that allows extension of LDACS towards a navigation functionality. Within the accompanying DLR internal project “LDACS Navigation” (LDACS-NAV) the actual navigation functionality is developed and verified in detail. Both projects are performed in close cooperation.
