OPeROL - Optimization of Physical Layer Performance in High Data Rate Optical Links



Free-space optical (FSO) communication systems are an emerging technology and are finding their role as complementary systems to the traditional radio frequency (RF) and wired fiber links. Thus, it is not surprising that FSO is being intensively studied, prototyped and flown as an option to increase the data rate in various space missions. As an example, the European data-relay system (EDRS) will relay data between LEO satellites, UAVs and aircrafts to the ground, through a constellation of GEO satellites. After Alphasat and EDRS-A were launched, the first satellite constellation is already in orbit. The objective of the OPeROL activity is to build a software simulator, based on extensive computer simulations, in order to design and optimize different options for the optical communications physical layer (OPL) of high data rate systems. The design and optimization of the OPL options predominantly address the FEC coding, the modulation scheme, the size of the channel interleaver and its interaction with the FEC coding function and the variability of the data rate to serve multiple transmission profiles and users.
