Training Research and Applications Network to Support the Mitigation of Ionospheric Threats (TRANSMIT)
The establishment of an Ionospheric Perturbation Detection and Monitoring (IPDM, http://ipdm.nottingham.ac.uk/) network was proposed and recognised by major European experts as the way forward to deliver the state of the art to protect the range of essential systems vulnerable to ionospheric threats. TRANSMIT will fully exploit the existing specialised European science base and take advantage of insight and full commitment from European industry and relevant end users.
TRANSMIT focuses on the training that is urgently needed to establish a real time system that will address a technological issue of importance to a range of European services and applications.
It will gather major European stakeholders on a 4-years training programme with the main goal to develop a capacity to mitigate the serious threats that the Earth’s ionosphere poses to Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and several modern day applications that rely on these systems, such as civil aviation, marine navigation and land transportation.
The project is of great importance to counter the corresponding vulnerability of the new European GNSS Galileo, as well as the European Space Situational Awareness (SSA) and the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) programmes.
In close cooperation with associated industrial partners TRANSMIT will be the enabler of the IPDM network. The functionality of such a network will be demonstrated via the SWACI service of DLR.
