Ka-Band Systems for Mobile Satellite Satellite Communications
Objectives of the KASYMOSA project were the investigation, development, and validation of novel technologies and algorithms for mobile satellite communications in Ka-band. In the frame of this project, the DLR Institute of Communications and Navigation implemented and demonstrated a layer 2 (MAC layer) protocol. The developed layer 2 protocol enables a self-organized communication via satellite for a moderate number of mobile terminals without a central hub station, as it may be the case in emergency scenarios and catastrophic events. This MAC layer protocol supports decentral resource management, adaptive coding and modulation, and different quality of service categories. It works without a central hub station and is robust also in case of partial shadowing. Furthermore, the developed layer 2 protocol supports synchronisation of system time via GPS and some management functions.
Target scenario was the emergency communication with a limited number of terminals. Tasks of the DLR Institute of Communications and Navigation were the development and reference implementation of a suitable Layer 2 protocol including novel algorithms for cross layer resource management. Core idea was a distributed resource management without a central hub station. Furthermore, the institute participated in the design and implementation of a suitable Satcom Network Evaluator. The project was coordinated by Fraunhofer Institut für Integrierte Schaltungen IIS, Erlangen.
