Unmanned aircraft are gaining more and more importance in the aviation sector. Lately, the point of interest in this specific field is increasingly including civil applications, too. One such civil scenario could be the transportation of cargo with Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) or more precisely, Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS). Today however, there are no defined processes for certification of these kinds of aircraft, yet. The same is valid for the operation of UAS or RPAS in airspace as well as on airports, where legal and technical obstacles remain. The goal of the project Unmanned Freight Operations is hence the development and validation of a concept of operations for unmanned cargo planes.
In this project, the Institute of Communications and Navigation develops new Communications, Navigation, and Surveillance (CNS) Concepts for the operation of RPAS. In a first step, the general framework has to be summarized. This includes international specifications related to the operation of RPAS. Further, relevant parts of spectrum for communications have to be defined, and appropriate technological approaches will be identified. Based on these considerations, the technical requirements of the individual components will be summarized. This includes, for example, required data rates or delays allowed for communication, or accuracy and integrity of navigation operations. Taking these two issues into account, detailed CNS concepts for RPAS operation will be developed.
