New Dependable Rolling Stock for a more Sustainable, Intelligent and Comfortable Rail Transport in Europe
One major achievement of the ROLL2RAIL project was the evaluation of existing technologies for future wireless train backbone networks. Analysis of the state of the art of wireless communications for railways was performed and gaps identified.
DLR-KN performed wireless propagation measurements for high speed trains and derived novel inter- and intra-consist channel models. Furthermore, LTE Layer 1 and 2 simulations with respect to the new channel models allowed an evaluation of LTE for wireless train backbone networks. The results are used as starting point for Shift2Rail projects X2Rail1-WP8 and CONNECTA-WP3.
Within the measurements, the worldwide first train-to-train propagation measurements were conducted emulating the future railway operation of virtually coupled trains.
