The results of the DLR-internal project Future Air Ground Integration (FAGI) showed the possibility of using modern 4D-Flight Management Systems (4D-FMS). The combination of an automatic air ground data link communication and an adjusted “Extended Terminal Manoeuvring Area” airspace structure enabled the effective implementation of noise reducing and fuel-efficient approach procedures. The project
picks up the main concept ideas of FAGI: Trajectory-based arrival management, user preferred trajectories, mixed traffic with different equipage, late merging point on final, individual optimized flight profiles, and time based arrival management. All project conclusions are gained from studies with simplified constraints only incorporating the most relevant operational procedure demands.
is the next logical step leading from the simplified assumptions of FAGI towards the challenges of a more realistic environment. This includes the quantification of noise reduction potential, fuel- and flight time savings as well as wind and weather influences.
also estimates the investments for required equipment which may have to be purchased and integrated by airlines, airports, and air navigation service providers. The extended concepts of
will be validated amongst others in human-in-the-loop simulations with controllers, pseudo-pilots, and controller assistance systems, using typical traffic movement scenarios of existing airports. The assistance systems support arrival, departure, and ground controllers, by planning and implementing improved approach, departure, and taxiing procedures as well as their coordination.
