EGNOS V3

EGNOS (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service) V3 definition phase (phase A activity) encompasses challenging and ambitious objectives paving the way for Europe to play a leading role in global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) for the post 2020 period. This system study aims at providing single and dual frequency GPS augmentation services equivalent to the modernized wide area augmentation system (WAAS) with, in addition, enhanced performances and robustness in the whole Geo broadcast area for those users equipped with standard space based augmentation system (SBAS) receivers capable of both Galileo and GPS. Moreover the baseline V3 system architecture will be modular and upgradeable in time in order to progressively accommodate and support a very wide span of brand new GNSS services for various user communities in case the need for such services is confirmed at program level, like the following:

  • High latitude navigation
  • Maritime services
  • Land user services
  • High precision services
  • Authentication services
  • Emergency services

As such, the present study will be a first step towards V3 definition. The expected level of completion of V3 definition dossiers is equivalent to a preliminary system definition, hence achieving a level of maturity for its key foundations that is sufficient to prepare and launch a complementary phase B.
