After landing in the steppe of Kazakhstan, Alexander Gerst will now set off for Cologne, where he will be expected by the Missions team. In the aerospace medical research facility :envihab he will start this evening directly with the first investigations and experiments of the so called Direct Return. Over the next few days, he will be supervised by a DLR/ESA team. "The :envihab offers ideal conditions for recovering from the physical strain of a long stay in space. Here, the astronauts are cared for by a well-coordinated, highly specialised team that has the necessary laboratories and state-of-the-art medical facilities," emphasises Prof. Jens Jordan, Director of the DLR Institute of Aerospace Medicine. Alexander Gerst will be in :envihab for the second time after his first mission in 2014. In addition to him, three other European astronauts have been there after their missions in recent years.
Over the next two weeks, the scientists and doctors will carry out investigations on behalf of ESA, NASA and other space agencies. These will include studies of his immune system and muscle function.
