At the creative workshop "Culture Challenge" of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research, the interdisciplinary team around Ralf Möller from the DLR Institute of Aerospace Medicine was awarded a prize. The interdisciplinary group brainstormed over two days on the challenge of cultivating microorganisms under realistic conditions in order to develop new cultivation strategies on the subject of "deep cultivation".
To date, a maximum of one percent of bacterial species have been cultivated under laboratory conditions, the rest being more or less unknown. The creative workshop "Culture Challenge" was organised to promote new ideas in order to investigate the still unknown active substances of the remaining microorganisms and biotechnological applications.
The winning teams were each rewarded with a one-year grant from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research of up to 200,000 euros and have the prospect of further funding.
